Manchester United have reportedly stepped up their search for a marquee striker by making contact with the representatives of Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez. According to journalist Marcos Duran, initial discussions have already taken place regarding a possible move to Old Trafford during the 2026 summer transfer window. A potential player-exchange proposal is also understood to have been mentioned during the early stages of negotiations.
The move signals United’s determination to strengthen their squad after securing a return to the UEFA Champions League. While much of the club’s attention has been focused on reinforcing the midfield, the search for another proven goalscorer has now become an equally important priority. Alvarez has emerged as one of the most ambitious targets on the club’s shortlist.
United’s midfield rebuild remains active despite progress in other areas. The club is believed to have reached an agreement with Atalanta for the signing of Ederson, with the Brazilian midfielder expected to complete his move after the conclusion of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. That deal is seen as a significant step in reshaping the team’s midfield ahead of the new campaign.
Other midfield pursuits have proved far more complicated. Manchester United were unable to make meaningful progress in their attempts to sign Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest and Aurelien Tchouameni from Real Madrid. Their attention has since shifted to West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes, although negotiations have reportedly stalled over the Championship club’s valuation of between £80 million and £85 million.
Despite those ongoing discussions, the club’s recruitment team continues to prioritize the attacking department. According to Manchester Evening News journalist Samuel Luckhurst, United require another high-quality striker rather than relying solely on Joshua Zirkzee as support for Benjamin Sesko. The return to Champions League football has increased expectations surrounding the club’s attacking depth.
Alvarez is regarded as one of the most sought-after forwards in European football. Reports claim Real Madrid previously submitted an offer worth £150 million, only for Atletico Madrid to reject the proposal. Barcelona and Arsenal have also continued monitoring the Argentine international’s situation ahead of the new season.
Manchester United have now reportedly become the second Premier League club, after Arsenal, to establish direct contact with Alvarez’s representatives. The approach underlines the club’s willingness to compete for elite talent despite the financial challenges involved. However, convincing the striker to choose Old Trafford is expected to be another significant hurdle.
Separate reports suggest Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone is interested in several Manchester United players. That has fueled speculation that a swap deal could become part of any negotiations between the two clubs. Although no names have been officially disclosed, discussions involving potential exchange options are believed to have taken place.
Any agreement remains difficult to complete given Atletico’s firm stance over Alvarez’s valuation. With the Spanish club having already turned down a reported £150 million bid from Real Madrid, Manchester United would likely need to break their transfer record to secure the Argentina international. No final decision has been made by either Alvarez or Atletico Madrid, but United’s pursuit appears to have moved beyond the stage of preliminary interest.
