INFRAME ASIA, DESTINATIONS – Bangkok has emerged as one of the most popular overseas destinations for Chinese travelers during China’s 2026 Golden Week holiday. The increase in arrivals has provided a significant boost to Thailand’s tourism industry during one of the busiest travel periods of the year. The trend was recorded during the October 1–7, 2026 holiday period, China Standard Time (CST, UTC+8).
Thailand has long been one of the preferred international destinations for Chinese tourists. Bangkok’s combination of shopping, food, cultural attractions and relatively convenient air connections has made the capital particularly attractive to travelers taking short overseas trips. The city is also frequently used as a starting point for journeys to other parts of Thailand.
The increase in Chinese visitors comes during a holiday period when millions of people travel within China and overseas. Golden Week combines the National Day holiday with additional public holidays, creating one of the country’s longest annual travel periods. International destinations across Asia have been competing for travelers during the week.
Bangkok has benefited from the strong recovery of Chinese outbound tourism. Airlines operating between Chinese cities and Thailand have maintained numerous routes, giving travelers several options for reaching the Thai capital. Direct flights from major Chinese cities also make Bangkok accessible for shorter holiday itineraries.
The city’s shopping districts are among the attractions drawing Chinese visitors. Areas around Siam, Chidlom and Sukhumvit offer large shopping malls, international brands and restaurants within relatively close distances. Bangkok’s markets and street-shopping areas also provide a different experience for travelers looking for local products.
Food is another major part of the attraction. Thai dishes such as tom yum, pad Thai, green curry and mango sticky rice remain popular with international visitors. Bangkok also offers a wide range of restaurants, from street-food stalls and traditional eateries to luxury hotel restaurants.
The city’s cultural attractions provide another reason for visitors to stay in Bangkok. Temples such as Wat Arun and Wat Pho remain among the most recognizable destinations along the Chao Phraya River. The Grand Palace and surrounding historic areas also attract travelers looking to combine sightseeing with shopping and dining.
Bangkok’s location also allows visitors to combine the capital with other Thai destinations. Travelers can continue from Bangkok to beach destinations such as Phuket, Krabi and Koh Samui. Others travel north toward Chiang Mai after spending several days in the capital.
The growth in Chinese arrivals is also important for Thailand’s tourism businesses. Hotels, restaurants, shopping centers, transportation operators and tour companies depend heavily on international visitors during major holiday periods. Increased occupancy and visitor spending during Golden Week can therefore affect businesses across Bangkok’s tourism economy.
Chinese travelers have also become increasingly interested in experiences beyond traditional sightseeing. Shopping, local food, wellness services and cultural activities are among the experiences available in Bangkok. The city’s broad tourism offering allows visitors to combine several types of activities during a relatively short trip.
Thailand has continued working to attract Chinese visitors by maintaining air connectivity and promoting tourism in the Chinese market. Bangkok remains one of the country’s most recognizable destinations for first-time visitors from China. Other Thai destinations are also being promoted to encourage travelers to extend their stays beyond the capital.
During the 2026 Golden Week period, Bangkok’s position as a major destination for Chinese travelers was supported by direct air links, hotels, shopping areas and a wide range of cultural and culinary experiences. Chinese National Day holiday travel continued through October 7, 2026, China Standard Time (CST, UTC+8), with Bangkok among the Asian destinations receiving increased attention from outbound travelers.
